A first encounter with California’s Downieville Classic, racing the same bike across an all-out cross-country test and one of mountain biking’s most storied descents. It became an exercise in balancing effort and control, challenging where I thought my strengths lay, and discovering how much there is to learn when the trail never lets you recover.
